How often should you clean your bed sheets?
Is there anything better than clean sheets! A freshly made bed, after a long busy day, is the perfect antidote for a restful night’s sleep. But how often should we be washing and cleaning our sheets?

Did you know that our sheets, pillows, and mattresses are full of dust mites? House dust mites live and feed off our dead skin cells. Prepare to be surprised – whilst sleeping 8 hours, we can shed one gram of skin. If we calculate that within a year, we can shed up to 3.6 kilograms! While dust mites are perfectly normal - they don’t harm and are invisible to our eyes, but we end up breathing in their excrement. This can contribute to allergens and skin reactions.

Washing beddings often, can help to control dust mites, even if you don’t experience any symptoms. It is not only mites we share our beds with -  Sweat, day to day dirt, food crumbs, pet hair, and fur also make their way in, making regular sheet washing a simple way to create a healthier bedroom environment. So while we all should be changing our beds once a week – as recommended by Allergy UK, there might be exceptions for different households.
  • If your pet sleeps in your bed, the Sleep Foundation advises it is best to wash your sheets every 3-4 days.
  • If you suffer from bad hay fever washing your sheets every couple of days during the Spring and Summer would be advisable as pollen particles infiltrate clothes fibres and lands on skin and hair.
  • In the summer, you may also be sweating more and may need to wash your sheets more often.
  • If anyone in your household is unwell it’s best to change the sheets every day to stop the germs from spreading - especially pillowcases. Always remember to wash sheets at 60 degrees and above.
